Zwigato sensitively touches upon the class and gender discrimination deeply embedded in our society. The tension of drudgery and desperation is palpable throughout the film, making it a poignant watch. The film portrays the struggles of the labour class in society, as Manas’ wife, Pratima, seeks employment to support the family financially, despite his disapproval. The movie also shows how a person gets declined from getting a government job probably because of his caste, which harms more than favours the film.
Zwigato is adeptly presented by Nandita Das and co-writer Samir Patil. The cinematographer, Ranjan Palit, masterfully depicts the commoner’s world through the dingy bylanes of Bhubaneshwar where the story is set. The film’s realism is enhanced by skipping Odisha’s majestic structures and exotic beauty.
